About

Mitat means ‘Gift from God’ and it literally was.

The Penthouse

Many moons ago, in the then sleepy town of Mossel Bay (situated at the door to the Garden Route) was a very successful backpackers called Barnicles. It’s first owners saw the potential of the stunning property and fell in love with the exquisite views.
Barnicles was sold for a tidy profit and the owners boarded a sailboat and, quite literaly, sailed off into the sunset.
Since then the backpackers changed hands a few times but unfortunately could not ride out the ression wave that hit Mossel Bay.
Finally, in 2013, the building was rescued by business owners from Oudtshoorn and lovingly revamped into modern, state of the art, offices. Not wanting to waste such a beautiful setting on just office space, they decided to turn the third floor into a luxury penthouse.
And so Mitat was born.

Mitat means ‘Gift from God’ and it literally was.
After its ups and downs the building fell into the right, loving, hands and finally the building has come to its full potential again.
Mitat has its own convenient and private entrance with a double lock-up garage and state of the art security system. The penthouse can make use of the state-of-the-art boardroom and conference facilities situated only a private staircase away and has full wi-fi access, making Mitat the ideal get away for business people wanting to combine business with a bit of leisure.
With its three luxury rooms and two bathrooms it is also the ideal place for families to take a much needed break and is conveniently close to all ammenities like shops, restaurants, hospitals and activities.

Probably the most diverse area in South Africa, the Garden Route offers everything from coast, to mountains to Fynbos to forests where elephants still roam.

Within a short driving distance from Mossel Bay there are various game farms, most of which offer the big 5 and some where you can walk with elephants or even lions.
For the more adventurous there is a popular sky diving club in Mossel Bay and we also have some of the best waves for surfing fanatics, with more than 6 surf spots.

Mossel Bay

Although it is today best known as the place at which the first Europeans landed on South African soil (Bartolomeu Diaz and his crew arrived on 3 February 1488), Mossel Bay’s human history can – as local archaeological deposits have revealed – be traced back more than 164,000 years and is the birthplace to some of the earliest modern human behaviour.
This makes Mossel Bay the oldest holiday destination in the world!

Situated 400km from Port Elizabeth to the east and 380km from Cape Town in the west and only 40km from George airport, Mossel Bay is the ideal starting point to visiting the world famous Garden Route.

For the more cultured, Mossel Bay boasts its own wine farm, Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar, where you can enjoy wine tastings while enjoying the stunning views of the vineyards and mountains from their deck. Helicopter flights can be arranged from Mossel Bay airfield to Jakkalsvlei.
Then there is Mossel Bay’s famous Romonza boat trips with daily Seal Island trips, sunset cruises or whale watching (from June to November) or you can go shark cage diving.

If all this is too much, with Mossel Bay’s all-year-round mild climate and sunny weather, it is the ideal place to laze on one of our Blue Flag beaches and just enjoy the friendly atmosphere.
